The Ferrari 330 P4 is One Sexy Beast

0

The folks at Petrolicious have given us an inside look at one of Ferrari’s most iconic cars, the 330 P4:

“As much as any other car, the Ferrari 330 P4 is the embodiment and culmination of an entire era of racing. With its low-slung stance and voluptuous lines, it is also among the most visually stunning cars ever produced. Combine these factors and the word “icon” slips to the tip of one’s tongue.

Still smarting from losing the Constructor’s International Sports Prototype Championship to Ford in 1965 and 1966 — and, in 1966, watching a trio of Ford GT40s finish 1-2-3 at Le Mans — Enzo Ferrari turned to his chief engineer, Mauro Forghieri, with a simple instruction: win. In world then dominated by Carroll Shelby and Ford’s formidable 7-liter engines, this would be no easy undertaking.

What resulted from Forghieri’s mandate was the 330 P4, arguably the greatest Ferrari endurance race car of all time. Based on the 330 P3 — and almost identical cosmetically — the 330 P4 represented a significant mechanical upgrade from anything Ferrari had run previously and, in 1967, it would return Ferrari to the pinnacle of sports prototype racing.

The highlight of the 1967 season came at the 24 Hours of Daytona, a race that would come to be known as The Revenge of Il Commendatore. Led by Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini in a 330 P4 (and trailed by Mike Parkes and Ludovico Scarfiotti in another 330 P4), Ferrari finished 1-2-3 at the hallowed Florida circuit. Soon thereafter, a pair of P4s finished 1-2 at Monza, and while Ford again won at Le Mans, P4s finished second and third and Ferrari was once again in possession of the sports prototype title.

Rules changes concerning engine displacement spelled the end of the 330 P4s in European racing, but by that time, the car had cemented its place in the pantheon of endurance racing.”

2003 SVT Cobra goes toe to toe with the almighty 2014 Nissan GT-R with surprising results

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzrJvL11on0

Ah, the invincible Nissan GT-R.  As ridiculous as this Japanese supercar may be, it does show some weakness when not racing from a dig.  This video illustrates just that.  This E85 Cobra makes 800RWHP, force-fed by a 2.8L Kenne Bell blower and 75 shot of nitrous, running on stock internals.

The R35 GT-R is full bolt on, also E85 powered.  Watch the video to see the outcome.

Thanks to ThatRacingChannel for the racing footage.

Oh man, oh man.  We are loyal to the Blue Oval camp, but we have to respect and admire the new Z/28 Camaro.  And we especially dig the John Hennessey touch, which puts this car at 636 BHP.  Say what you want about John Hennessey and his checkered past, but the man knows how to make fast cars goes faster.  Enjoy the symphony of exhaust noise from this Z/28

Lexus is building LFA Successor

0

01-2011-lexus-lfa-review

The idea of a Lexus LFA successor has kept its fans talking for years, even before the last one rolled of the line in 2012. But now it’s Toyota that’s keeping the conversation going:

Lexus’ executive vice president Mark Templin recently told reporters that the company has plans to build a successor to the LFA, a plan that apparently has Toyota president Akio Toyoda’s approval, according to Bloomberg

Before a press event for the new Lexus NX crossover, Templin commented, “Akio believes that every generation deserves to have a car like an LFA, so we’re building an LFA for the generation we have today.”

The original LFA, which spouted out 552-horsepower from a high-revving 4.8-liter V10, took over a decade for engineers to design and develop, so we should be cautiously skeptical as to when we may see a new LFA.  Toyota already has a few stokes in the fire with the joint Toyota-BMW sports car partnership and the rollout of the all-new Lexus RC and RC F coupes.

When it does debut, pricing should reflect the original LFA’s MSRP at around $375,000, though figures north of that shouldn’t take anyone off guard. Lexus intended the original LFA to price in the $120,000 ballpark, but as more technology and features were added during development – the price grew, substantially.

The Lexus LF-LC concept, revealed at the 2012 Detroit auto show, has yet to find a production date and remains the crowd favorite as a potential LFA successor. Think it can take-up the reins of the LFA? Templin commented, “I won’t tell you yes, and I won’t tell you no.” Hmm…

5,000 HP Battle: TT Gallardo vs Turbo Boss 302 vs Nissan GT-R

Supposedly, this Turbo Boss 302 traps over 170MPH in the 1/4, but it doesn’t seem to hookup very well on these runs.  Watch it take on a UGR TT Lamborghini Gallardo and a T1 Race Development Nissan GTR.

Regardless, the Mustang seems outmatched by these two cars, even if could get traction.

Track Battle: Nissan GT-R vs BMW M5

On the surface, this comparison seems like a no-brainer: AWD, alien-technology GT-R vs. an aging V8 BMW M5.

The GTR is an incredible machine. It can transform power into speed and finds grip almost everywhere.

That said, we’d still buy the M5 if it were our money, because it is a much nicer car and still no slouch. Unless we were going to be using it for track days, the overall quality and luxury the BMW offers is more appealing.

BMW Dinan V10 Glows Purple on the engine dyno

Why would it glow purple?  Regardless, this an awesome video of a 5.0 BMW V10 strapped to engine dyno.  This monster is music to our ears.  Bavarian Motor Works at it’s best.

Enjoy.

“We love the 5.0-litre V10 from BMW. Besides having an affinity for any engine with more than eight cylinders, the torque-happy 5 litre sounds like straight glory and is happy to induce all sorts of tail-wagging fun from the outgoing M5. The minds at Dinan have taken the time to put the engine through the standard performance ringer by boring and stroking the block to a full 5.8-litres, dropping a set of performance cams into the head, bolting on a dry-sump oil system and wrapping the whole project up with a set of racing exhaust headers.

What did all of that effort net? How does 720 naturally-aspirated horsepower at 8,300 rpm and 497 pound-feet of torque grab you? The engine was specifically designed to be used in the Riley Technologies track day car. We just like seeing it punish the engine stand and light its exhaust purple.”
