Ford will be returning to Le Mans in 2016 to go head to head with Ferrari, and will also reveal an all new Ford GT supercar, possibly as soon as the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

This is a very big deal.

What kind of powerplant can we expect to see? Nothing is set in stone, but our source claims that Ford is “working very hard” on a high-horsepower, EcoBoost platform – possibly in the form of a V6.  We’re not sure how we feel about that, but lets just hope that Ford wises up and debuts the car with a Twin Turbo 5.0 Coyote platform, but we shall see.

“Recent meetings between GTE constructors on 2016 rules were witnessed at the Circuit of The Americas, and have included a high-ranking representative affiliated with Ford, and based on additional feedback, a launch of the Ford GT 24 Hours of Le Mans project would coincide with the introduction of the successor to the Ford GT, which ceased production in 2007. . “

Why 2016? It coincides with the 50th anniversary of Ford’s victory at Le Mans with the Ford GT40 Mark II, so it would be the perfect opportunity to take the fight to the Corvette and Ferrari in LeMans, France.

We are skeptical, as we have yet to see any type of prototypes testing, or concept images, etc – but our source is reliable, so let’s be patient.  We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.
